Louis Sachar is the author of Holes, which I loved. The Cardturner was pretty good but I didn't love it. It's about a kid who helps his great-uncle play bridge because he has gone blind. There's a lot of bridge talk in the book but Louis explains the rules as the story progresses. About three-fourths of the way through the book-- it takes a fun turn.
