What makes a book a classic? Here are some of my thoughts:
-teaches a lesson (ex: don't commit adultery--or you'll end up miserable: Anna Karenina)
-changes your life (The Giver)
-haunts you (The Hunger Games)
-makes you miss the characters after you're done reading it (Harry Potter)
-takes the country by storm (Twilight)
-makes you smile and cry (The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society)
-you would recommend to almost anyone (Goose Girl)
-makes you laugh so hard (The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie)
-inspires you to follow your dreams (Listening for Lions)
-eats away at your soul (The Scarlett Letter)
-makes you feel accomplished (Jane Eyre)
-a great love story (Persuasion)
